On The Ultimate Harry Potter House Quiz

Based on the Big Five personality traits, this quiz maps your score on the most well-respected personality test in Psychology to the four Harry Potter Houses.

Are you a Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin

Harry Potter fans have been asking that question since the first book in the Harry Potter series was published in 1998. Growing up with Harry Potter through the series undoubtedly makes the reader feel connected to the magical wizarding world created by JK Rowling. In fact, many of us have wondered which Hogwarts House the Sorting Hat would put us in if we too received our letter to Hogwarts on our 11th birthdays (I’m still waiting for mine, by the way!).

A google search of “Harry Potter House Quiz” gets us 54,000,000 result pages. Wow. Even JK Rowling has her own quiz on the paid site Pottermore. But many of these quizzes are based on imagination, rather than science.

Until now. Using the gold standard personality test The Big Five Factor Model, you can answer just 10 questions and your Harry Potter house is revealed. This quiz is inspired by the first 10 psychometric indicators of the Goldberg’s 1992 refinement of the original International Personality Item Pool (IPIP-NEO; originally with 300 items). The Big Five are considered to be the five basic dimensions of personality, with significant research to back it up. Though the style of this test is different than the personality test, we tried our very best to line it all up and make it related to the personality literature.

Though the Hogwarts Houses themselves are fantastical, JK Rowling gives us clues through the behaviours of her characters. Luna Lovegood is a Ravenclaw, with fans describing her as kind, creative, and open to new experiences. Newt Scamander (the main character from Fantastic Beasts) is honest, warm, and empathic. Draco Malfoy is the prototypical Slytherin, who is described by fans as being arrogant, competitive, and judgemental. Neville Longbottom, the Gryffindor, turned out to be courageous, values-driven, and loyal.

Go ahead and take the test. It’s anonymous (I have no idea who you are! This is just for your own benefit!). If you like the test, please share your results on social media and help people find the quiz! It should only take around 3 minutes.

The Sorting Hat has spoken.

Please Note: Harry Potter is fiction. While this test does use real measures from an actual personality assessment, the connection to the houses themselves are just for fun.
